A GANG armed with claw hammers stole more than £700,000 worth of luxury watches during brazen daylight raids on two of Manchester’s most exclusive stores.

The five men smashed glass display cases in Selfridges and Harvey Nichols and stole about 100 watches and other items of jewellery by brands including Cartier, Breitling, Louis Vuitton and Theo Fennell. The stolen pieces range in price from about £1,000 to more than £30,000.

Shocked shoppers and staff watched as the gang wearing motorbike and BMX helmets raided the neighbouring stores at 11am yesterday.

They split into two groups with three men running into Selfridges and smashing cabinets near the internal entrance to the Louis Vuitton shop. They stole Cartier, Brietling and Louis Vuitton pieces worth around £400,000.

At the same time, the other two members of the gang ran into Harvey Nichols on the other side of the pedestrianised New Cathedral Street.

One man struck a security guard as they made their way to the Theo Fennell display case, just inside the front door to the right of the shop. They stole jewel-encrusted watches worth in excess of £300,000.

The security guard received minor injuries.

Westerback's on Mikonkadu hit in broad daylight; police suspect Estonian connection

Two men of foreign origin robbed the Westerback jewellery store on Helsinki's Mikonkatu at 13:02 yesterday, Thursday. This was the fifth gold heist in Helsinki in the course of the past 12 months.
      One of the men threatened the staff with a handgun while the other broke the display window with a hammer from inside the store.
      In addition to the staff, one customer was present during the hold-up. Nobody was hurt during the incident.
      According to information gathered by Helsingin Sanomat, the haul included about 20 valuable Cartier, Breitling, and Eterna watches.
      The value of a single watch may be as high as thousands of euros.
